Will how far I have to travel to see my kid affect how much I pay?

My son lives on the other side of the country with his mother. I try to get up to him every few months.

When I go up to see him I have to travel a long distance and stay in hotells (which is not cheep!) his mother won’t let me have him overnight or even for the whole day.

I was wondering if or how any of this would affect my payments?

  1. Yes you can apply to CSA for a variation. Save all invoices/bills for travel such as airplane tickets, hotels, car rentals etc and phone them up asking for how to apply for a variance to your CSA payment.

You have to submit evidence to them including the invoice/bills to show how muc you spend on travel, but you can be success as we have done it and our amount was reduced by £15 a week. My husband paid £150 per week CSA, reduced by £15 due to distance involved. Please send them this info, as if you are asked to do all travel to see your child, this is expenses involved where ex isn’t covering her fair share.

FYI – you can also go for a Court order if you wish to see about making transport arrangements formal to see if a judge will make her do some of the travel.

I am astonished at the level of mindset by some resident parents with children where the sense of entitlement to money from their ex is so high – its almost like you should have to pay as much as you can so they don’t have to work and just another source of income for them.

  2. To Lawrence

I have the same situation and I have never got help with access, and they don’t make allowances for it either.

I am told though that you could get a court order, but whether this is enforceable? Don’t know.

CSA don’t really care about all that though and neither does the law.

  3. Thanks guys. Also, I was wondering if or how paying csa could help me in gaining proper visitation; like does the fact that I’m paying towards my son give me any rights regarding spending time with him? Or is that something that would have to be settled through mediation or court?
