Why are they wasting resources chasing money from 19 years ago?
2 weeks ago I received a letter from the CSA telling me I owe them money from 19 years ago. They say for three months my ex-wife claimed ‘social’, hence I owe them approx £359. This is despite them closing my case a couple of years back.
Also this is despite my ex-wife and I never went through the CSA. I always paid promptly through BACS system to my ex-wife. So the questions are these why are they spending resources chasing money from 19 years ago and how do they proof I owe them money. Even the banks and HMRC delete their records after this time!
I will not give up without a fight!
Also how do they find your address?

if you ex was on benefits, even for a short time, prior to 2006, there was a legal requirement for her to open a CSA case – at that point the purpose of the case was to recoup money for the Secretary of State. If your ex declared the money you paid to her to the benefits agency at the time her benefit would have been adjusted accordingly. There appears to be a sum outstanding still owed to SoS. The legislation does not allow for SoS debt to be written off regardless of how long it has been owed.
There will be an address and contact number for the office that deals with your case on the letter that you received
