They’ve taken money from him, but I haven’t had it

February 6, 2014

My son is nearly 12 and every year the CSA write to me and tell me I should be receiving £5 a week from my ex (I believe he is in receipt of benefits) and that they will pay the money into my bank.

Frankly when I received these letters, I have thrown them in the bin. I have never received any money from the CSA. I assumed this was because they hadn’t got the money off my ex. I wasn’t bothered because the amounts seemed miniscule and insignificant and to be honest I didn’t want to cause grief between us over 5 pesky quid a week.

However, their most recent letter has prompted me to get on their case as they clearly state there are no arrears – suggesting that they have been taking money from him.

So … nearly 12 years worth of £5 adds up.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and how did you resolve it with them? Were you able to get all the payments backdated?

If he was or is on a benefit throughout the whole of the claim then arrears do not build up….this is what I was told by the csa because whilst a nrp is on a benefit the case is technically kept on hold. If money was taken from his benefit and not passed onto you it could be held in an account waiting on you to claim it.
