That amount is disgusting. We had the same thing with arrears and the only way we could get them to actually sit down with us and go through it was:
– We stopped payments (you probably can’t do that if they take it at source)
– They threatened us with court
– I wrote to our MP
– Our MP wrote to the CSA and basically demanded someone look at it
– They assigned us a case worker and a court appointed officer.
– They sat down with us, went through it all and magically £10,000 of arrears turned into £700.
I would try writing to your MP – tell him they’re taking all your money and won’t explain why it’s all owed. Copy the letter to the CSA Central Appeals Unit.
I had the similar grief from the CSA back in 2008. I had a phone call saying I owed over £11,000 in arrears, owed to the Secretary of State. I had always been compliant and paid regular monthly maintenance for many years. They also put a DEO on me and threatened me with a Liability Order/baliffs.
The CSA are on targets/bonuses and in particular go after the PAYE earners in order to balance the books. If a PWC is in fear of domestic violence from an ex partner, the CSA won’t go after him. They have to balance the books and you sound like an easy target.
Follow the advice given by Bella.
Also request your Data Protection file, which costs £10.
There is a long drawn out complaints procedure. Never speak to the CSA on the phone. Request every thing in writing and send all correspondence recorded delivery as well as email and email your MP into everything. If you get nowhere you need to contact the Independent Case Examiner and Parliamentary Ombudsman.
