  1. It’s only until 20 if your child is in non advanced education. If your child finishes A’Levels and goes onto a degree this is advanced education and you do not continue child support. Or if they leave sixth form and get a job at 18 you do not continue to pay.

When my daughter goes to University next September I will still support her when she comes home, with food and clothing if she needs it it’s called being a parent.

  2. Cake & eat it, you are an adult at 16, but if you are in further education you are a child until 18…….where does 20 come in. In the same boat.

  3. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child defines a child as everyone under 18 unless, “under the law applicable to the child, majority is attained earlier” So no children are not legally classed as adults at 16 years old.

In addition children can not leave education at 16 years old. They must stay in some form of education or training until their 18th birthday if they were born on or after 1 September 1997. So there is no ‘cake and eat it’

It would be unusual and a small minority for a young person to be in non advanced further education until 20. Most 18 year olds go on to uni or get a job.

Children don’t get to 16 and become fully functioning financially independent adults where they do not still need a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and clothes on their back still provided by a parent. By complaining of and being reluctant to contribute to their financial provision is the same as saying you agree with none of the above being provided to your 16-18 year old and rarely up to 20 years old.
