I need closure from CSA

Following the collapse of my marriage I had custody of my son..after 18 months it was clear my job and hrs did not suit him as much as his mothers did…she was a teacher..so he went to live with her.

We had an amicable split..untill she got sick claimed benefit I got the csa ..she went back to work but they did not leave me alone.

I shared all my sons costs..he traveled he never needed for anything..in short no maintenance was required by my ex for him and we shared him as much as we could..the CSA were just not required.

I had a breakdown, worked here and there..still managed to provide for him..they sent me a bill for 33K ! arreas..anyhow after years in the wilderness i signed on and they contacted me saying the amount was now 13K.

I continued to work under the radar..or just drift semi homeless..my son aged 16 moved in with me…I got a letter asking for 13 K ! long story short.. I have always provided for my son and sacrificed a career to have a life with him havea decent home for him to visit and he benefited through travel and education..his college laptop was £1500.

I have not heard from them for 2 years ..they issued a liability order…and I think it went to a debt collection agency. I want to stop this and not live ‘on the run’ I am happy to contibute to the arreas but am frightened to contact them…wake the dog as it were…I am mow self employed and wish this monkey off my back…any ideas?

Some folks say if with a debt agency they may have given it up…or they might (collection agency) negotiate..or pass it back to CSA..how do you discover the state of your case?

Rambling I know but want some closure..but have little money.

  1. I think you need to establish if these arrears are correct, if they are owed to your ex (she can have them written off) or to the secretary of state. Don’t bury your head in the sand and start facing it because csa will not go away. My husband had a letter demanding about the same amount as you for a period he was not working, turned out CSA had him on a interim maintenance assessment calculation, with help of our mp we had it re-calculated and he owed zilch! He also had a liability order on him but that was a balls up too as it was sent to his ex wife and he knew nothing of it until his ex went to appeal as she wanted her money that turned out she wasn’t entitled too.

If you had shared care why didn’t your ex close the case with them?

Please don’t keep running from them because once it’s sorted you can live your life but get help and advice to fight them. Best of luck.
