Do my payments change now my daughter is 18 and has left school?

Hi, I’m currently paying my ex-partner £800 per month in child support. My daughter turned 18 on the 1 June this year and has left school. I still have a 16 year old son in full time education but wanted to know if my payments would change given that my daughter has now turned 18?.

Thanks Sean

  1. If the PWC is still claiming CB for the 18 year old because she is not in work or claiming JSA then CM is still ongoing till the Monday before the 19th birthday. If the daughter starts work or claims a benefit in her own right(I am going through this now)then CM stops.I think that your money will now be reduced for the 16 year old,but it could depend if you have any arrears,I am sure you should be paying 15% to the PWC.My stepdaughter has a interview for JSA today because she has left college and will be 19 in September, our CM will be finished this month as the PWC cant claim CB and Child tax anymore after she signs on.We offered to give the stepdaughter the CM payments until she became 19 years old but her mother refused this(she wanted the money herself)so we signed the daughter up for JSA.

  2. Correcting information on the above….On the NACSA site it states that a child leaving school/college (termination date) in May/June stops paying First Monday in September,It also states that CS remains payable until the terminal date, which is a period after a child has left school/college.A school leaver still counts as a child for CS up to the Sunday following the date unless s/he is 19 before that date,in which case it is the Sunday following the Monday before their 19th birthday.
Hope someone on here will give you more additional information.

  3. Depends if you are on the new or old system. If you are on the new system then it will go down to 15% for one child unless arrears are involved.

Child maintenance as Alice says continues while child benefit is received. My eldest has left school this summer, but child benefit will continue to be paid until the start of the next term so maintenance would be due to that time aswell.

If you are on the old system then the rules are different.

  4. Bad news for NRP’s with 18 year old children. Stepdaughter went to claim JSA today only to be told that she cannot claim benefits for herself till Child Benefit finishes on September 3rd. The PWC is going to claim it till then so my stepdaughter has to do without money till she is entitled to JSA.Can look for work but cannot claim anything from the state.PWC will not allow CM to be paid direct to her ,so still giving her pocket money as well.JSA to stepdaughter would be £56.00 were upon the ex is claiming over £80 in CB and CT.

  5. Karma soon enough though Alice, and you are almost at the end of this episode!

I feel for your stepdaughter at a time where she will want money of her own to spend as she wishes and she is still being controlled financially to an extent. Hoepfully she will find a job soon

  6. Just been on a site FOOTPRINT.Interesting reading.ie The CSA will soon introduce changes to use their service.you will pay anywhere between £87 and £7,519 a year.If you decide to use the new CSA ‘gross income’scheme the first stage is a calculation..This will cost the PWC an upfront calculation fee of £20.00.Once payments start the NRP will have to pay a surcharge on their payments at a rate of 20%.This extra money all goes to the CSA so is dead money which will not reach the PWC.In addition the PWC will have a further 12% deducted from the payment made to them-more dead money the NRP has paid but which does not go to support the children. For example on a weekly maintenance assessment of £50.00 ,the NRP would actually pay £60.00 per week but the PWc would only recieve £44.00 per week.Over a one year period that would amount to £832 paid to the CSA none of which would go to the PWC. On top of that there is a possible further charge of as much as £120.00 arising fron application fees..You can see why it is better to make a private arrangement .
