CSA stopped taking money just to build up arrears
I have a 15 year old daughter for whom I am responsible for. The CSA were taking the payments for her directly from my employer which I didn’t have a problem with. In a recent payslip I noticed that a payment had not been taken and I contacted my ex and informed her of this and told her to contact the CSA to find out what had happened. Up to this point I had no contact with the CSA. This scenario continued for a few months until they obviously got their act together and the payments resumed. The problem is that there was now in arrears and they were taking the maximum they could to pay off the deficit.
This left me with the bare minimum to live on. After paying bills etc. I was left with £67 a month to live on. At this point I contacted the CSA and spoke to some arrogant kid who informed me they were entitled to take 40% of my net wage until the debt was paid off. I have since been offered a 30% pay back rate. During all of this they refused to accept any responsibility for the failure to take the money. They told me it was my responsibility and my error that the money had not been taken.
I was talking to a work colleague today who is in a similar position to myself and he informed me that the debt can be paid back over 2 years. I was never informed of this by the CSA when I talked to them. Does anyone know if this is the case? I have no problem paying for my daughter and never have had but I do object to the underhand way the CSA take money from all of us without any consideration for the hardship they put us through.
