CSA blunders mean I have arrears

I have arrears with the csa due to a blunder on there part. I started uni full time to get a better job. I sent a letter telling the csa that i was leaving emplyment to enter into full time education. I was aware i should of been, exempt from csa whilst studying. But due to the csa never reciveing the letter, they have charged me for 3 years study and are now making me pay this back.

I have a standing order set up to pay the arrears off , which ive been paying for months. Now i recieve a call telling me they are forcing an deo on me because this is the prefered methord of payment. They have told me that this is a voulntry deo, there is nothing voulentry about.

This is an outrage, they are treating me like a criminal, forcing me to do something that i feel is wrong, They are not prepered to listen to me.

Also my child now lives with me. it has taken them over 6 months to organise payment from the mother.

  1. Write a formal letter of complaint showing the CSA that you were in college and had no income. Let them know you advised them you were in education.

Also get your MP involved as your complaint will be dealt with quicker.

. Could be worth your while also getting a copy of your file from the DPU Unit to ensure they received the letter about your studies. They charge £10 for this.

Reason they like DEO’s is because it is guaranteed money and makes their records look good.

  2. Darren,

If a copy of your letter shows up in your Data Protection File or has been noted on the computer system, then you will be in a position to get your case rectified.
If not, it’s doubtful the agency will do a retrospective change of circumstances.

  3. When you see yor M.P. insist that he/she make a formal complaint to the Parliamentary Ombudsman regarding serious and prolonged maladministration. Serious because of the amount of alleged arrears and prolonged because you informed them of your situation years ago!

If the ombudsman attempts to whitewash your complaint……make a complaint agianst the Ombudsman!

  4. If there is no evidence that the letter the OP send was actually delivered by Royal Mail or received by the agency, it’s doubtful that any amount of complaining will change the situation.

We should keep copies of ALL correspondence sent to the agency and post it signed for mail.
