David Cameron announces an end to closed IT projects

April 7, 2008

David Cameron has announced the Conservative Party’s IT strategy if they should come into power. He’s said there will be no more closed IT projects such as the ludicrously expensive NHS supercomputer and the £320 million that has been outlined for the child support agency.

“From the NHS computer to the new Child Support Agency, they rely on ‘closed’ IT systems that reduce competitive pressures and lead to higher risks and higher costs. A Conservative government will take a different approach. We will follow private sector best practice which is to introduce ‘open standards’ that enables IT contracts to be split up into modular components.”

These are strong words from Cameron and would spell an end to the shady deals the UK tax payer has been forced to fund over the last few years under the Labour government.
