Why are they assessing me as employed?

November 11, 2013

My son is 17 and lives with his Dad, we are going through a divorce. I was made redundant two years ago and have been self employed ever since. I began a CIC company but wound this up last year in July making a £500 loss.

I have been living off my redundancy money, I am a psychotherapist and had some clients but not enough to qualify me to pay anything, they assessed me and concluded this. I moved from Lancs to Oxford in April and now do work for a private clinic on a self employed basis.

The CSA have been at me constantly, I explained that my tax return was done and I got a tax rebate and paid no tax. This next tax return will also mean I pay no tax as my company folded. The CSA say now I have regular work I have to be assessed from April to October and show profit and loss. They said my tax return is irrelevant as my ex cannot be expected to wait. I have been assessed by the employed department even although I have explained I am self employed.

They rang m the other day and the woman I spoke to said I was being assessed b the wrong dept and should be transferred. They are taking £255 a month from me backdating this from February even although I didn’t start making any money with the private clinic until April. They money they are assessing from is pr tax but they don’t take that into account, also when I asked what happens if the work dries up or I get sick as I get no money, he said I have to save up and make allowances for that. I don’t understand why thy are assessing me in the employed dept and why thy say my tax return is irrelevant. Any advice wold b welcome before I speak to them again.

The only way forward for fathers like you is a mass movement. As a psychotherapist what’s your view on these people?
