My car urgently needs replacing, I live 30 mins from my work place where I am a self employed computer engineer. (engineer a big word) There are no buses and I make the occasional callout to customers.
Question is: Am I right in understanding that business rent is not deductable in the eyes of the CSA? also if I lease a commercial vehicle and decide to become a mobile engineer will the CSA accept this? can I put the vehicle against the business expenses?

    Hi Lobby,
No, the CSA will not take into account your need to get to work. However what type of self employed business do you run? Are you a sole trader of a limited company?

What might be worth exploring is the "Company Car" route. If you allocate yourself a company car and you deduct the amount from your salary then this means that the CSA will re-calculate based on you new, slightly lower income. This is a lot easier to do if you are a limited company, because I have just done the same thing.

If you also choose a car with very low emissions (less than 110g/mile of CO2) then the tax break is even better.

If you have a good accountant go and speak to them.

    Cheers

The CSA told me that I cannot put business rent against expenses. I wanted to know that if I closed the business premises and worked instead from a leased van then would this be classed as expense?
I would then go out to customers and fix their computers onsite or bring them to my home to fix.
