hi i have just gone self employed as i was made redundantfrom my other job
i have a little boy with my ex partner and a girl with a new partner who i have split with before she was born as after eight weeks of knowing her she got pregnant!!!!i wasnt living with er so dont even know if its mine she is now hownding me with the csa.my little boys mum is ok with what i give her as if he needs shoes ect i get it and also i have what ever contact with him but the other woman wont even let me see the girl and wants all my money.
how does the self employed thing work with the csa
    many thanks andy

also i've looked at the csa calculator and after they'll have taken money for both my children and i've paid my fuel for the week half my wages will have gone. i knowi can claim my fuel and work expenses back but thats not till the end of the tax year, also i was planning on putting some money aside in the bank each week incase my tax bill is higher than what i'll have paid. seems to me i'm going to be worse off working self employed than i was as an empolyee on a firms books but in the job i do there isn't any jobs on the books.

The CSA are incompetent and not above subversion and bullying.Be very careful in dealing with them by telephone. It would be much better to only contact them by letter.
The CSA will not be interested in how long you have known the mother or whether you ever co-habitated. If you doubt parentaged - get a test, as disproving parentaged would be the quickest method of closing out the case. I've been over-assessed for 3 years and the CSA have yet to resolve my case.
For the S/Employed, the assessment is usually based on the latest available set of trading figures, but I am unsure how they would assess you in your first year of business. The assessment is however based on income after allowable business expenditure, so you could minimise income by buying as many tools/instruments as you can afford and by only working part of the year.
Another option would be to start a Limited Company and become an Employee of that company and pay yourself the minimum wage. This is a much more straightforward method of dealing with the CSA, as you can say to them I'm earning X per week and the assessment can be worked out quicker.
If you stay S/Employed, you will have to find a lump sum to make a payment on account.
Whatever you pay to either woman, pay them DIRECRTLY and in a way you can prove e.g cheque. Do not make payments to a third party like bank (mortgage) or landlord (rent)as these payments may not count.
