My friend works as a nurse with approx net pay of £1500 payed every 4weeks.Her normal maintenance payments should £300 for this period. However due to arrears the CSA have a detachment of earnings order, originally for Approx £550. Because she felt that she was unable to meet this amount, due to a short term difficulty. She contacted the CSA by telephone and agreed on a new figure of £350 until the difficulty had passed, with a view to increasing asap. However the amount actually taken from her wages was £750.Again she telephoned the CSA . The !st person to speak to her confimed the £350 agreement was on the screen and was putthrough to someone else to sort it out . The very arrogant chap lust repeatedly told her that due to the arrears the were , by law , allowed to take 35% of her net income. This however only leaves her £220 per week to pay all her bills etc , and run her car of which she needs for work, and it doesn't take into account that petrol costs for work alone are £120 for a 4 week period . She is beside herself with worry and feels that she will eventually lose her job as she will not be able to afford to get there or that other bills will go unpaid until the bailiffs come and take all her belongings etc etc . she wants to pay back the atrears but feels that she is being put in an impossible situation . What should ahe do ? Regards D Sheppard .

Hi i was in the same boat almost 7 month ago, i even made csa aware that if they were to take £447 from a £900 wage i would be forced to quit my job, i asked for reduced payment on the arrears, and was refused.
i explained that my current child goes to nursery full time to enable both me and my wife to work and we will not be able to continue working if this continues.

i unfortunatly had to quit my job, and look after my child in the week while the wife continued to work full time, you can imagine the effect it has had on us.

i have had to seek a new job that is double the annual salary of my last just to be able to make the payments and be slightly better off.

unfortunatly there is no easy answer to the awkward situation.
