My son is 18 in a few days time and is about to finish "A" level exams.

In normal cirmcustances, I understand that this would mean that I would be liable to continue to pay child maintenance to the CSA until the end of the formal term on September 1st (apparently this is to allow a child a reasonable period of time to get a job, or to cover their costs until they go to University).

My son has got a job and starts the day after his exams and I am sure that I heard somewhere that liability ceases if the Child gets a job working for more than 24 hours a week in the period following the completion of their exams and 1st September.

Since the child has (effectively) got a full-time job, this logically means that the period of time normally allowed for them to get one should not apply. Also, I'm pretty certain that Child Benefit ceases to be payable once the 24 hour working week threshold is reached. So it seems logical that the liability to pay Child Support should cease in-line with the child being regarded as an "independent adult" for Child Benefit purposes.

Rather surprisingly (given how often this situation must occur), I can't seem to find anything concrete that will clarify the position anywhere.

    Can anyone confirm the position?

    Thanks.

How long do you have to pay child support? When is the child no longer a child? At 18 I'd consider that a grown-a** man. If your child has children of his own, and buggers off, and has to pay CSA, does that mean you have to also pay an additional tax to the CSA for your child's extra expenses?

You are correct if your child is working now for over 24 hours aweek in a paid job then his CSA does stop.

Be aware it is on the onus of the parent with care to inform the CSA of this but will she do this. So if i was you i will do it. It is you who is paying this money not her.

The only thing that you would be hit for would be arrears these will continue until your arrears are paid in full.

Again if it is only arrears that is owing your ex can stop these payments by just ringing them up to cancel them. If she is one income support at the time of these arrears then you would be still liable to pay these unless you where on Income support as well.

Get tough with CSA they are a public body with some government powers. Dont let them walk over you.

    good luck
