Hi there,

My son was born in 1991, and me and my partner split up shortly after. The CSA contacted me and between 1991 and 2001 I paid various amounts from £70.00 - £95.00 per week through an attachment to earnings order, even though I was paying regulary in the first instance. I was a postman at the time, so the only way I could cover these kind of payments was through overtime. My mother then became ill and I took four months off work unpaid to look after her. I also lost my London flat in 2001 after getting behind on my morgatge payments and moved jobs later that year. I admit my mistake in not informing the CSA of moving jobs, but it was an extremely stressful time. The CSA then got back in contact with me in 2003 and advised that my new payment would be £35 per month. (greatly reduced due to my greatly reduced wage). This was paid until 2008. I then received a letter from IQOR debt collectors for the £7000 arrears I had supposedly amounted. I did not question this at the time and it was arranged that I would pay £5 per week via standing order of which I never missed a payment. IQOR had been in contact at various points over the last few years, but in November last year they advised that they were going for an attachment to earnings and I upped my weekly payments to £10 per week. They have now sent a request to my employer for £110.00 per month which is quite a big leap and will place me in financial trouble. The CSA advised me today that the £7000 arrears are made up of a sum £87.50 per week for the 22 months (roughly) that I did not inform them of my new job which was alot lower wage then when I was with Royal Mail. I suppose my question is, can I appeal against these arrears? Can IQOR enforce an attachment to earnings, and if so why have they took five years to apply for one? Thank you for any advice.

The child in question is 16 and i have never had any contact with him or the mother, and no maintenace has ever been calcualted by the csa. They have never taken money from my wages or when i was a student. Am i going to end up with a bill of thousands? should i send them my details?

Hello everyone,

Any advice would be hugely beneficial I really don't know what else to do. My little boy was born on the 6th September 2011 and he is 5 months old today. I have seen him 4 times all together as my ex has done everything she can to sever any contact between me and my child.

I took my ex to court the minute I knew she was going to be difficult. I have done everything the right way but solicitors are now becoming too expensive and now paying CSA [which i don't mind paying] is making me think I will have to give up.

It's not something I want and my ex has blocked my every attempt at seeing him and then lied in court saying she had given me numerous opportunities to do so. I have been accused of being an alcoholic when I'm not so I will be doing a Hair strand test to show I am not.

On the 9th Jan I was awarded parental responsibility and will be put on his birth certificate. I had to agree to 1 hour a weeks contact on a Saturday morning of which the order stated my ex not to be in the same room as me for that hour to avoid any confrontation. I am probably the most laid back guy there is but my ex has an eratic temper and can become incredibly hostile very very quickly.

Contact started a few weeks ago and it seemed all the money i'd spent on court fees, solicitors was worth it until a week ago Saturday. I turned up for my hour at 9am went in everthing was fine my ex was upstairs I could hear her clumping around. I had my little boy in my arms and he was smiley and giggley at first. He started to get ancy as he was getting tired but i pacified him myself. After i settled him down i sat back down with him cradled in my arms and he fell asleep in my arms. It was the most amazing experience and I felt that maybe a bond was ever so slightly materialising.

Once asleep my ex's mother after going upstairs a number of times said we should put him in his rocker. I would have been happy to have held him for the remaining half an hour but he was basically taken off me. At this point I took a few pictures and a video and my ex's mum demanded me to stop otherwise she would call my ex down. She came flying down the stairs and snatched my phone out of my hand. She went to walk upstairs and i followed her. About three steps up she turned around and basically ordered me to delete the photos and I refused. I stood at the bottom of the stairs with my hand out waiting for her to put my phone in my hand and then her mother sort of got it off her after a struggle between the two of them.

Her mother then said Nick go outside and I said not until I have my phone and then she threatened to call the police at which I gave her a funny look. She then said go outside I'll give you the phone so i stood half in half out with my foot lodged against the door so they couldn't slam it in my face. My ex's mother handed me the phone with my ex trying to grapple the phone off her own mother. She shut the door and I walked off. My parents have never seen the little one in person, nor has my nan or my sister. So photos are the things I have to see him when I don't get to see him in person and hold him.

My ex then called the police and distorted the whole story and claimed I assaulted her by "grabbing her by the wrist and dragging her back down the stairs" the only time we may have physically touched is when she snatched my phone off me. It's rediculous and I would never put my hands on a woman under any circumstance neither have I ever had a brush with the police. I had to give a recorded interview statement the next day on Sunday morning. The accusation was dropped as there was no evidence to say I had done what I was accused of and my account of the incident was far more in depth.

I now couldn't have my contact with the little one Saturday just gone because they will not facilitate contact in their home. I get absolutely no protection and am sick of being accused of things that I haven't done. I am really worried as to how far she is willing to go. As if its not enough to sever my contact with the little one she actually tried to incriminate me, producing a fabricated story and lieing to the authorities. I will be taking her to court again to get the order enforced as she has breached the order in 2 out of 3 contact sessions. It's a horrible situation but Chuck [my little boy] has a right to know me and now I will have to wait for a contact centre to host the contact and that could be a month away. 4 hours with him that I will have been made to miss and any bond that started will have gone so I'll be back to square one yet again.

I am sorry for the essay but any help would be greatly appreciated.

That may sound like a stupid topic so please forgive me!

My partner received a letter from the CSA after 15 years requesting maintenance of £39,500.

The original question we have continously asked of the CSA is can they provide proof that my partner knew of the claim which has not been properly answered as they have only advised they sent mail which was returned as "dead mail" and that face to face officers could not trace him.

We have now requested the file as they won't provide the information we have previously asked and have requested all information that they hold but what will we actually receive? Do they copy everything and send to us and if anyone has had to do this how long does it take, or is it a computerised spreadsheet of all info?

Also we have received breakdown of maintenance due which is £10,000 wrong as they had him assessed as paying maintenance of £101 when he was unemployed for 100 weeks. Do we appeal this just now? I had prepared a letter stating on it "in no way is this an acknowledement of the debt until sufficient evidence is provided I was aware of the claim". Unfortunately there is time limits to appeal the amounts which exceed the length of time to get copy of the file as I understand it is 40 working days.

Any help so greatly appreciated.

Hi, My brother has recently split up with his girlfriend with which he has a 3 month old girl. he did not want to split up but moved out because she became impossable to live with. She is manic depressive and says she's bipolar, she does not take her medication and this shows. She can be perfectly fine one moment then the next she is arguing with the nearest person for no reason at all. She comes from a very well off family and has wanted for nothing and has well and truley got what she wanted from them when she's stamped her feet. My brother works very hard and never asked her for anything money wise. If my brother is invited out for a night with mates (which is not every weekend) she would start an argument about it and tell him it's over and claim to everyone that he is a bad father. Her feet stamping is not working with him. She will spend the day at her mums house where her mother will look after the girl, then when my brother got home from work he'd take over, get up in the night if need be and so on. They've been apart for 4 weeks now and he has had his girl every saturday since and been round a few days in the last week as he now has no work, (he worked for her father aswell) She makes no attempt to be nice with him and because he is not rolling over and doing what she wants she is now threatening to stop him seeing their daughter! She has no reason what so ever, it's just because she cant control him. They met today to arrange access properly, she had a letter written which said he could only see his daughter on saturdays between 11 and 4 and only at her parents house! Shes making things sound like he's unsafe to be around, He loves his daughter to bits, would never harm anyone or anything. He did not sign the paper and she then said she'll get the courts involved. He went to leave and she blocked his way while holding their daughter, he went to say goodbye his girl and just give her foot a tickle but his ex turned her away and said no! I have told him to seek advice and if so get the courts involved before she does. He is an hard working, caring bloke who will help anyone in need and has no history of any sort. She has barely worked a day in her life as she has lived of mummy and daddy, is mentally unstable in my eyes and is just genrally a spoilt little brat that is not getting what she wants. I think he has a very solid leg to stand on but he's worried about making things which i understand but he has to stand up for himself. Most of what i've read on here is just mothers complaning about child support money (no offence) and i havn't seen much from a fathers side.
Where should he start?? any advice will be greatly received!

Hi, been paying my ex the full amount in a private agreement for 11 years now.
She is demanding more money and saying she will go to the CSA, but i've checked on the CSA site and what i'm paying her now is what they would take off me - but she wants more than that.
I've always paid and i always will pay for my child. Plus (as you would) spend extra on my kid every month.

I live with my new wife (2 years married now) and her two kids of a previous relationship. My ex is adamant that the CSA will take into account my new wifes income when it comes to calculating the amount. Is this the case?

hi all i am on benefits and on friday i was called into my local job centre and i was told if i did not give my childrens fathers information then i would lose my benefits, why do i have to do this, my ex partner is a good man and doesnt give me money directly but does pay £200 each month to each childs bank account, without fail its there on the 15th of each month, this is so they can have a good start when they leave home (accessable when they reach 18)

how can they threaten my benefits? this really worried me so i gave his information, now he says if he ends up paying to the csa he will stop putting the money into their accounts, this is just messing with my childrens lives, why are they doing this?

Hi, not sure if posting in right forum!

we have a nil maintenance assessment from the csa, have had for a while due to husbands low salary , so have been paying husbands ex directly as a voluntary payment to prevent animosity- well at least minimize it. Stepdaughter has now turned 18 and has been out of education for at least 6+ months and looking for a full time job. She has now found a part time job at place her mum works. we want to stop paying husbands ex and put the money into an account for stepdaughter instead. If we contact the csa will they close the case now she is 18 and working part time. Dont want to contact them unless that is the case as previous contact has always ended in mistakes which take forever to rectify, really cant afford them to make a mistake. Any advice please

My partner got a letter stating he was due £39,500 for his daughter after 15 years! No previous correspondence from CSA and no breakdown either of how they came to that figure. DEO in place based on incorrect assessments etc.

We got MP involved and after re-assessing some assessments CSA reduced this to £31,500.

We only yesterday got the breakdown of maintenance which shows he is due £12,500 for 124 weeks. Out of the 124 weeks they are on about he only worked for 24 and the remainder of the time was in receipt of Sick Pay of £75.40 and the Jobseekers Allowance. We have wage slips, bank statements etc. to prove this.

Will the CSA reduce the arrears and amend the DEO or do we have to go to court?

Any help here appreciated

My partner of 4 years has 4 children to a previous partner. We have no children as we cant afford them. His kids stay with us every weekend in our 1 bedroom council flat. Currently my partner has a wages arrestment order which gives 60% of his wage to his ex, He is left with £500 +/- per month. I am currently off work on Statutory Sick Pay (£86 per week)and have been off for 3months. We have been declined for housing benefit and any other benefits as my partners income before deductions is too high. We are really struggling to pay rent and are currently over £1000 in debt. I understand that my partner should provide for his children but the financial situation doesn't quite make sense to me. Could anyone give me any advice?

My husband works but has a net income of £66.00 per week. He pays maintenance for his 2 children from a past relationship and always has done so. Today he recieved a letter from the csa out of the blue stating that he had to pay more over the next coming months, he was paying £88.87 per month which is deducted from his wages, but now they want him to pay £165 per month from march onwards, they say this includes arrears but we don't know where the arrears have come from?? We live together with our 6 children but they seem to be ignoring the fact that he is financially providing for our family on a very very low wage,we only claim ctc and cb, he dosen't work enough hours to claim wtc. Should these amounts be correct considering that they state on there own website that if your net income is less than £100 per week then you should only pay the flat rate payment of £5 per week??

This is really strange. I have just received a letter from the CSA, stating that I have been put forward as the father of a child, born last year. It is ludicrous for me I have not slept with any woman for more than 5 years, and I have never so much as been on a date with the mother.

It actually took me some time to work out who it was. Essentially I started a new job a few years back, and I was almost immediately pounced upon by the office gossip girl. I straight away took a dislike to her, and I am never keen on sharing my private life with people I don't know, especially when it was obvious to me that I would be the topic of conversation for all her. I was not rude but she asked me if I had a wife or girlfriend and I joked "This feels like an interrogation" and when she did not back off, I told her straight that I did not want to talk about my private life.

She left the company 12 months or so later after not having anything particularly to do with me, except maybe putting 3 or 4 letters on my desk: that is the totality of our 'relationship'.

So:
a) as is is totally impossible for me to have fathered a child with this woman why should I be forced to give personal details to the CSA? Am I obliged to share anything with them at all. (I will obviously tell them the story of mine and her 'relationship')
b) If I am forced to give my details will she get to see them? (This could be why she is doing this, to be nosey about my personal life...I cannot imagine why else)
c) I have been reading about DNA tests and the like...surely I should not be in the position to have to front money and waste my time to do this? Like I said, I have exchanged about 20 - 30 words with this woman and never seen her outside of work.
d) Do the CSA use a withheld telephone number, I have a considerable number of missed called from both withheld and 0845 numbers. If yes, please tell me I can make them stop.

The CSA told me that one of the best ways to beat the CSA is to be the owner of the Child Benefit "Book". I also was told that if I do become the owner of the "book" then I could go to the CSA and get the ex to pay me a regular maintainance payment.

I have made a claim for it and the Child Benefit web site says that if two people make a claim for one child then they will decide on who should own it.
Despite having "shared custody" on my child (50-50) and that my daughter is registered with the doctors and dentist at my address I think I'm still probably on to a hiding to nothing. But, Please, if anyone has any experience in this area I would love to hear from you. I will obviously shared my experience should I manage to beat the odds.

We are two retired UK citizens, who have recently had the son of an ex-family friend move in with us. He is 16 and in full time education. He has moved out of his home where he lived with his mother due to unresolvable difficulties between them. She has consented his decision to leave. She currently recieves maintance from his father (NRP).

We are in the process of applying for child benefit for him. If this is approved, are we entitled to recieve maintenance?

We have contacted Child Maintenance Options and they have told us that if we receive child benefit then we are entitled to maintenance from both his father and mother, regardless of whether he was forced from his mothers home or left on his own terms.

Is it possible for us to recieve maintenance from both of his parents through the CSA? We cannot arrange a private agreement as we are not on speaking terms with his parents.

Hi, i am new to this site but am pretty desperate and need some advice. I split with my ex just over 3 years ago when I was self employed and employing 2 people. I have 2 kids, who I do not have a problem supporting. However, the CSA were contacted by my ex and I duly sent them the last set of accounts that I had. An assessment was made, and I began making regular payments. My financial circumstances have changed dramatically over the last 2 years, but, despite me sending more recent accounts, etc, to the CSA, the assessment has not changed. Unfortunately, I did not send anything recorded delivery, and the CSA have said that they have not received anything from me. They took me to court, claiming £4500 in arrears, but had already taken over £9000 from my bank account a few days before the hearing, without me knowing anything about it until after the event, and I have just received a letter telling me to pay another £7000 in arrears.

The csa are basing my payment amount on 3 wages slips, which are three slips in december and as a pstman these three slips are probably my three biggest pay weeks, and as such are demanding 400 a month from me,for my three kids,i was previously paying 315 a month,is there any grounds for appeal and that they could judge my payments ona greater number of weeks? many thanks

Guys,

Looking for your advice if I can.

I was contacted by the CSA last May after an ex said I was the father of her 4 year old son. I’ll not go into too much detail but during the brief time we were together she lied about everything other than her name and was sleeping with at least one other person, however I suspect there to have been more.

I have no idea where she now is however I know that she is married and has another child. Things that in life I’d have loved but now have an issue with relationships after what she did to me. Anyway my sob story aside the CSA basically caught me off guard last time around, phoning me on a Saturday morning totally out of the blue.

There being no way out at the time I paid for and had the DNA test and waited for her and her son to take theirs. Four weeks later and not hearing anything from the CSA I contacted them who in turn contacted the mother. That evening I got a withheld call from her saying she wasn’t prepared to take the test and as a result the CSA dropped the claim.

Something told me in the back of my mind that she’d make an attempt in the future and on Friday got a call from the same free phone CSA number. This time I did not answer and blacklisted the number on my phone so when they call it just hangs up on them immediately.

My question is this, how long can I get away with avoiding them before I’m pushed into taking the DNA test again. They’re bound to call me on my home number but I let these calls divert to my mobile and always let these calls go over to my voicemail.

I almost feel that this is some sort of game and this time I’m going to play it to the best of my abilities, however some worldly advice would be very much appreciated. I’m sure after the calls the letters are bound to follow, is this basically the end of the line when this happens or do they need absolute proof that I have received them (i.e. a signature)?

Finally I’ve read loads on this site (which has been amazingly helpful and comforting in many ways) with regards to self employed people. I’m a sole trading tradesman, can any of you give me some advice as to what I should be doing right here and now (before the CSA do get me). I’ve heard about going limited and only paying yourself a pittance with dividends making up the lion’s share, can anyone provide more detailed assistance??

All my thanks in advance,

M

Hello there,

I have recently found out about variations. I've asked the CSA to send me out a form 3 times now. Nothing yet.

I have no problem paying child support at all and have never missed a payment.
I recently got a new job and a slight wage increase.
My CSA payments look like they're going to go up quite a bit as well.
I spoke to a nice lady at the CSA about variations this morning. Essentially, I have to pay an extra £180 a month on travel costs as well as child care twice a week for both my kids. They go to an after school club until I'm able to pick them up after I finish work.

I already have the shared care thing. The CSA told me that they would only take one or the other. So its either I pay for the travel or I dont have my overnight stays taken into consideration. (if that makes sense?)

I was also told today that they would NOT take into consideration the fact that I have to pay child care costs.
It used to be that their mum paid for the childcare with her tax credits. After they stopped when her new partner moved in, I am now having to pay the childcare costs.
I also have a loan that was taken out when I was with her (7 years ago) which I am still having to pay back.

I've tried to read through the variation regulations, but they seem quite confusing.

Does anyone have any serious info on this please?
I've always paid my child support as well as buying clothes, haircuts, school uniforms, shoes, everything a normal father would do.
The problem I have is that I'm finding it crippling to have to pay the extra for childcare as well as an extra £90 a month for travel costs.

Any ideas or direction will be very much appreciated.
Thanks you.

Hi Guys I wonder if you would be so kind to help me, as I am very confused about the CSA.

OK I have just received a claim from the ex wife for my 2 children, very happy to pay just don't understand how to make the calculations, below I have listed my current income etc, I have re-married and have a new born child with my new wife.

Ok so need to pay via CSA for 2 Children
I don't have access to the children
I work part time and have an income after tax etc of £150 per week
I have a small company running at a loss about £20K, for last 2 years, no income taken from that.(i am told CSA dont look at losses from self employment?)
I get working tax credits every 4 weeks £550
I get new child tax credit every 4 weeks £250 ( will they take from my new child i hope not)
I have a medical condition and get disability element of the working tax credit, built into the amount award.
I also receive industrial injuries Disablement benefit, for life award about £120 per month, I did read that I would pay £5 a week with this benefit is that extra or total??

would I be right in thinking that I will need to find about £50 a week from now? Thanks for the help guys, its a big help when on a low income.

hi all i am a nrp with 2 children to 2 women (1 each), i live in scotland (laws may differ slightly).

i have been paying csa in the past and i am a hgv driver that when employed i work away from home, due to the being away part i get a tax free allowance of £20per night on my wages to cover my expenses whilst being away,(this is for parking charges, shower facilities and occasionally covers part of a meal, ONLY PAID WHEN AWAY FROM HOME)
due to this allowance csa made errors on my wage deductions calculations, when i phoned to let them know they told me they would seas payments until they investigated they issue, as promised this was sorted but took some time i never got any overpayment returned and ended up in serious arrears, i then changed jobs due to a move of regions and they miss calculated my payments and i ended up with more arrears final tally is around £6500.

They then requested it to be paid up within 2 years and arrested 40% of my income as i have a new partner and 2 step kids this quickly got me in to arrears with my household bills and within weeks forced me in to unemployment.

i have now taken on the role as houseman not claiming any benefits as my partner is at college. I urgently want to get back in to employment and have offers of jobs all the time but whilst this 40% deduction hangs over me as soon as employment commences i find my self in a black hole.

i also feel my kids that i pay csa for would be glad of the financial help the csa brings when i return to employment.

Can any body help with this, my household has very little income and i cant afford to get lawyers involved.

Many thanks.
