CSA publishes grandparent advice guide

Child Support Agency advice is helping grandparents across the UK to understand the role they play in supporting their families at times of separation through the publication of a new advice document.

A recent survey by the polling company YouGov revealed that six out of ten adults turned to family members when their relationship broke down, with half of those people seeking solace from their mother or father.

As more than two million UK children currently live in a single parent household, in order to offer information to extended family in the event of a marital separation where the couple has children, a new guide for grandparents has been produced offering CSA advice containing details on child maintenance payments.

Janet Paraskeva, chair of the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission, has revealed that twenty five percent of the people visiting the CSA website are over 55 years old, demonstrating the concern of older family members and their need to offer practical help when a family is separated through a relationship break-up.

Ms Paraskeva added that the CSA hopes its new grandparent guide will lead to effective maintenance being arranged by the separated couple to most benefit their dependent children. It outlines pursuing maintenance payments either through the CSA itself or via the courts or in a private arrangement.

With around 300,000 couples with children separating each year, the guide also offers advice on mediating should both partners not be on speaking terms or how to deal with missed payments by one party.
